What are the benefits of Galvanising and Painting your new iornwork?

Traditionally, protecting steel from corrosion involved either the use of galvanizing or some type of paint alone. More and more specialists are utilizing a combination of both methods of protection in what is commonly referred to as a duplex system.

The process of hot-dip galvanizing results in a metallurgical bond between zinc and steel with a series of distinct iron-zinc alloys, which prelong hte life of hte steel.

When paint and galvanized steel are used together, the corrosion control provided is superior to using ether alone. It not only looks better painted but it will last longer too!

  •  How does it work?
  • Galvanized coating protects the base steel, supplying cathodic and barrier protection.
  • Coating prevents the underfilm development of ironoxide, the outward pressure of which can cause paint to blister and peel.
  • Paint, in turn, gives barrier protection to the galva nized coating.
  • Paint slows down the rate at which the zinc is con sumed, greatly extending the life of the galvanized steel.
  • once the paint has been weathered down the zinc is available to provide cathodic and barrier protection so rust will not grow and paint will not peel.

Used together it provide corrosion protection 1.5 to 2.5 times longer than the lifetimes of zinc and paint used individually.

Do you want to paint your ornamental ironwork? been put off by the risk of flaking or peeling paint or think the gold will fades and look ugly after a few months? Then its time to contact Metal Art Wales. Painting your pre-galvanized, metalwork will increase its life span as well as enhance the look.

Metal Art Wales use high quality professional vinyl paint, using our expertise and correct application it will not peel.  Metal Art Wales use liquid metal paints which will not fade, we have various shades of gold, silver, copper and bronze.

Why do some paint peel?

Some types of paint will not adhere adequately to galvanized steel or will only do so under restricted conditions. In order to ensure a successful duplex galvanized and paint system, Metal Art Wales find the right paint system with a first coat that is fully compatible with a zinc surface. This first coat serves as a "tie coat" or interface between the galvanized steel and the topcoat. To achieve a good interface, it is important to understand the characteristics of all the types of paint that will be used. Each individual formulation of paint exhibits unique characteristics that can affect its suitability for use with galvanized steel.

Don't risk it get the experts in!

Metal Art Wales

Metal Art Wales use careful surface preparation techniques which are needed to alleviate potential coating failures. Years of experience have enabled us to determine how to use the age and characteristics of the galvanized coating to understand what type of surface preparation is needed. When the surface is cleaned and prepared correctly the combined paint and galvanized steel corrosion protection system gives extremely long lifetimes.
